Our Origin Story

Why culture isn't just a business philosophy—it's the foundation of everything we do.

Where It Began

For years, Matt Kiernan worked hard to improve his skills and advance his career. He did what ambitious people do: he climbed, he achieved, he built expertise in the pharmaceutical services industry.

But after personal losses in his life that demanded his time, Matt realized he needed to change his priorities and work differently.

That realization became the blueprint for everything that followed...

When Culture Becomes Your Competitive Advantage

At Barnett International, Matt saw culture-first principles in action as the operating system that made everything work. When he founded Pharmica Consulting and Intrinsic Clinical Systems, he built those same principles into the foundation from day one.

Culture wasn't an HR initiative. Culture was the strategy. Employees stayed longer, performed better, and came home fulfilled. Clients became partners because they could feel the difference.

Both companies succeeded. Both were acquired. Both proved that culture isn't soft. It's the hardest, most durable competitive advantage you can build.

But here's what mattered most: the people who worked there didn't just build successful companies. They built lives they were proud of. And that's the point.

Building a Different Kind of Site Network

After exiting both companies in 2021, Matt attended the SCOPE conference. He wasn't looking for his next project. He was listening.

Site owners, CROs, and sponsors all expressed the same concern: as clinical research sites consolidate into larger networks, they're losing their local culture, their connection to the community, their identity. Sites that had served their communities for decades were being absorbed into networks that standardized everything.

Matt had spent his career proving that culture drives performance. He'd built companies where people could thrive. Now an entire industry was consolidating in a way that would eliminate what makes clinical research effective.

Sensorium was formed to give sites another chance—a chance to thrive while preserving the culture that makes them successful. By focusing on what truly matters, we're advancing clinical research and helping patients who are waiting for new medicines that could change their lives. That's how Sensorium was born.
